Ernestine Higgins Dodd
November 29, 1928 ~ August 30, 2020

Ernestine, affectionately known to family and friends as "Ernie", passed away peacefully at Torrance Memorial Hospital due to multiple medical complications.

Ernie was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ellen Jane Higgins, her husband, Charles Dodd, and her companion for many years, Douglas Russum.

Ernestine was born and raised primarily in Los Angeles.

Her father was an officer in the Salvation Army and his family was stationed at many different locations around the U.S. during her younger years. They lived in Oregon ('31-32), Northern California ('33-35), Florida and Georgia ('35-36) before returning to Southern California in 1937 to manage the Salvation Army's Evangeline Residence for Women in downtown Los Angeles. Not only did they manage the Evangeline, but they lived there as well. A single child growing up in a "hotel" with nothing but single women. She graduated from Occidental College with a teaching degree in elementary and junior high school education. She was also a member of the Delta Omicron Tau sorority.

Ernestine and Charlie, affectionately known as "Fonz", were married in the Cox Memorial Chapel in Dallas, Texas on June 2, 1951. They were married for 43 years until Charlie's passing in 1994. Together they raised four children, Leslie (Evoy), Charles Edward (Ted), Michael Trevitt (Mike) and David Matthew (Matt). As a homemaker, Ernestine was very active in all areas of her children's lives. She was the disciplinarian of the family, tough but fair. She was involved in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA, Little League and worked for many years for the City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation department. Her kindness, caring and compassion welcomed many into their home and there are many today who would consider her a "Mother". An avid traveler, she had 5 world tours and could tell you stories "in detail" of every one of her journeys.

Ernestine is survived by her children Leslie (Pat) Evoy, Ted (Star) Dodd, Mike (Patty) Dodd and Matt (Carrie) Dodd along with 9 grandchildren – Eryn, Jeremy, Richie, Anna, Michael, Shawnie, Dalas, Dominique and Hudson plus 6 great grandchildren – Burton, Cedric, Charlie, David, Sophia and Dustin.

The entire family wishes to thank the staff at Torrance Memorial for their kind and compassionate care. We will be traveling to Colma, California with Ernie's ashes to reunite her with Fonz on June 2nd, which would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.
