We've lost one of the good ones! David Edward Callahan (aka Birdie) passed away on November 9, 2021. David was born at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica on April 24, 1947. He followed his fraternal twin, Dennis Phillip Callahan, into this world. Dennis liked to remind David that he was the first born!
In 1951 the family moved to Manhattan Beach where David and Dennis attended American Martyrs Catholic School. He continued on to Mira Costa High School where he played football and tennis. David graduated from Long Beach State University with a BA and later transferred to Loyola Marymount University where he graduated with a Master of Education.
David loved his childhood growing up in Manhattan Beach and he had many life-long friends. He loved going to the beach, playing volleyball, surfing, and laying in the sand. One of his favorite passions, as a member of the JC's and Critter Crabs, was playing Slow-pitch in Manhattan Beach for 30 plus years. He enjoyed golfing and watching sports, especially football.
David worked in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 33 years as a high school administrator. His last and longest assignment was in South Gate where he mentored many, many students and took pride in their accomplishments. He retired in 2006.
David leaves behind his wife, Carlene, daughter, Kelli Hyde Chilingarian, son-in-law, Gary, two grandchildren, Christopher and Caitlyn, and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Virginia, his brother, Dennis, and his granddaughter, Casie Leann Hyde.
A funeral mass will be held at American Martyrs Church, Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 10:00 am. Immediately following the mass there will be a Celebration of Life at O'Donnell Center.
In lieu of flowers, please remind your family and friends how much you love them.
