Long time Manhattan Beach Resident, Steve Voorhees, found peace on September 14th. He passed away at the age of 81.
He grew up in Hermosa Beach and graduated from Redondo High School. He went to Hawaii to surf the big waves for a couple of years and then enlisted in the Navy. After the Navy, he went to El Camino Junior College where he met Nicola "Nikki" Voorhees, his wife, of almost 60 years.
In the early years of his marriage, he was a Lifeguard in the summer, and worked part time at various jobs before he became a fulltime Lifeguard. During his career, he was President of the Lifeguard Association and went to Sacramento to fight for Wages & Benefits for the Lifeguards. Eventually he rose to the position of Captain of the Lifeguards.
He loved the ocean and surfing, the mountains and fishing in the Sierras and his beloved family.
He leaves behind his wife, his children Coerte, Todd and Romy and his grandchildren Edwin and Caitlin.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Voorhees Residence on October 21 at 1pm.
