Steve A. Oliveira, known to many as Dr. O or Dr. Steve, peacefully passed away on 8/15/2020 at 8:15pm with loved ones by his side.
Born 7/7/1961 to Alberto and Joan (Stringer) Oliveira at SouthBay Hospital. A true South Bay native, he was baptized at St. Cross in Hermosa Beach, attended La Marina, Begg and Aviation H.S. class of 1979. He attended Loma Linda University before earning his degree from the USC School of Dentistry in 1986.
He chose the perfect location to open his own dental practice in El Porto. His office had a relaxed atmosphere with an ocean view, Hawaiian shirts and Khakis were common attire. Here he provided excellent, professional dental care for over 30 years. He was honored with the coveted "Best of the Beach" title for many years.
If not surfing, one could find him running on the Strand, waving/chatting to most passers-by, he knew EVERYONE! He was very athletic, he completed 24 marathons including LA, NYC, Honolulu, and Catalina. He also ran multiple half marathons and countless 10k/5k's, including the inaugural Hometown Fair 10k. He's also been skydiving, air gliding, waterskiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and many more.
Steve had a passion for flying. He had a Commercial Pilots license but only flew for pleasure. His favorite destination was Catalina's Airport in the Sky. Often an invite to lunch would be a quick "hop" over the channel in his cherished V-tail to DC3 Grill for a Buffalo Burger or tacos!
Steve loved his cars. He spent years restoring his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda, he owned since High School. The result is a MOPAR/muscle car lovers dream...Candy Apple Red, 10ltr HEMI ... 1,000 HP!! Almost every Friday night he would be at Ruby's Redondo Beach for the Cruise the Beach car show. He participated in many car shows up and down the coast, Reno & Las Vegas...usually winning top awards.
Steve enthusiastically participated in the Active 20/30 Club for many years. They raised money for local youth & abused women programs. Hometown Fair had them selling Turkey Legs which always sold out & was a top fundraiser. He met most of his life-long friends thru 20/30. He was also involved in many other community groups over the years.
Steve was an adventurer, with a love for the outdoors and the ocean. He traveled to exclusive destinations and secluded surf spots around the world. Hawaii, Mexico, Indonesia and the Philippines were a few.
Steve will be remembered by many as a loyal friend, always helping others, witty and a loving person. He was a true Stand up guy, especially to Bernice & her girls. He will be greatly missed.
