Another local legend has permanently left the beach. Samuel Houston Brakel, a longtime resident of the Southbay died Friday, June 28, 2019 in Boise, Idaho. He was born August 21, 1944 in Eugene, Oregon to parents Samuel and Nora Brakel.
He studied at El Camino College and Cal State Long Beach. Following his retirement, Sam studied Theatre Arts at Boise State University. Sam worked in the restaurant industry, in Information Technology and as a Boilermaker and Welder. He was a proud member of UA Local 250. He loved to sing Americana, with a soft spot in his heart for all things true and tender.
Sam was well known throughout the community as he coached and played beach volleyball for over 50 years.
With a heart as big and wide as the sea he loved so much, he will be missed dearly. Sam is survived by son, Robby Pagliai (wife, Michelle, sons, Giovanni and Gianni) of Wahiawa, Hawaii; daughter, Kisha (daughter, Kira and Eric) of Hermosa Beach, California; daughter, Jamia Thompson Albright (husband, Jon and sons, Dylan and Bodhi) of Star, Idaho; and son Samuel of Redondo Beach, California. Sam is also survived by four siblings: Bernard, Kitty Otto, George, and Margaret Pierce. He leaves behind many cherished friends and family members who love him.
Funeral Services will be held 3 pm on Friday, July 19 at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach, California. A Celebration of Life will follow at 5:30 pm on the beach at 22nd Street in Hermosa Beach.
