Ria R. Deuerlein
Longtime Hermosa Beach resident
Ria R. Deuerlein, 87, passed away on October 29, 2020 at the Josephine's Garden Villa residence in Manhattan Beach.
Born in Leiden, the Netherlands on January 10, 1933 to the late Jan and Agatha Fredrika (van Leeuwen) Plug, Ria enjoyed a happy early childhood in a large extended family (52 first cousins). World War II, however, brought deprivation and tragedy, most notably the loss of her father to an aerial attack on his fishing vessel.
After the war, Ria completed her secondary education and embarked on a period of adventure, including children's hospital work in Germany, service in the Royal Dutch Air Force as an athletics trainer, immigration to the United States and work near Chicago, a couple years of work and travel in British Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and finally, a move to the Los Angeles area, where she was hired as a receptionist at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. There, Ria met numerous celebrities of the day (Elvis, Sinatra, etc), and more importantly, fellow hotel employee, the late Robert Deuerlein, whom she married in 1960.
After some years at home with young children, she transitioned to a role as bookkeeper for the Transcon Company of El Segundo, where she worked for over 15 years.
Despite the demands of working and raising three sons and a number of foster
children (and a long parade of pets), Ria remained a passionate traveler. She would
diligently save money for visits to relatives in Holland combined with family trips throughout Europe. In her retirement years, she journeyed by camper van across the western USA, as well as through much of southern Europe. A Hermosa Beach resident since 1974, Ria was a caring and generous mother, doting grandmother, and lifetime animal lover, but also someone unafraid to speak her mind on issues about which she was passionate. She enjoyed activities with the Hermosa Beach Women's Club, volunteered at LAX Travelers Aid, and was for several years a co-manager at the H.B. Farmer's Market.
Preceded in death by husband Robert Deuerlein in 1986, and Jacobus (Koos) Van Ekeris in 2001. Survived by sons Greg, Rodger, and Trevor; daughters-in-law Monica and Silje; grandchildren Nicole, Cory, Oscar, and Erica; and by numerous family members in the Netherlands.
There will be a small remembrance event for family and friends in Hermosa Beach in late November. Please contact Rodger Deuerlein at rodger.deuerlein@gmail.com for details.
