Michael Calvin Carey, age 71, passed away at his home in Lahaina, Hawaii on Sunday January 20th due to heart problems. He was born on May 4, 1948 to Charles and Madeline Carey in Long Beach, CA and was the third of four boys. He grew up in Manhattan Beach, CA where he graduated from Aviation High School, class of 1966 and excelled at basketball. He went on to letter in volleyball for San Diego State University as the Co-Captain. While at the university he met his first wife Jan and they had two daughters Jennifer and Stephanie. He worked for the Chart House while attending college and later managed the Chart House restaurants in Lahaina, HI and Aspen, CO. He had a profound love of the beach, and was a self-described sports fanatic. He could often be found at the volleyball courts in Manhattan and Hermosa and went on to compete in the Manhattan Beach Open and win Second place in 1976 and third in 1975. He later married Sherrie and had two children, Justine and Matthew. The call of the beach led him to move to Kaanapali, Maui in 1993 and he spent every day up until his death spreading the idea of Maui no ka 'oi. Mike was known for his fun loving attitude, and an outgoing personality which led to the nickname of 'Coach' while working at the Hula Grill and Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. Though he was retired, the past few years he would often be seen walking around Kaanapali and meeting up with friends (both old and new) wherever he went.

Michael is survived by his children, Jennifer Carey Springer (Scott), Stephanie Jean Carey, Justine Carey Coull (Alasdair), Matthew Calvin Carey; brother, Tim Carey (Kim); sister, Teresa Veria-Means; and 6 beautiful grandchildren, Danielle, Emily, Joshua, Theo, William, and Elspeth.
