Lillian S. Kramer Obituary
Lillian S. Kramer
June 9, 1928 – June 19, 2018

Lillian S. Kramer (1928-2018) passed away Tuesday, June 19, at the age of 90. She was at home with family, after a long struggle with COPD. Lil was born in Sibley, Iowa to Lillian and Ernest Sommerfeld, and was a South Bay resident for over 60 years. She received her degree in Physics with minors in Mathematics, English and Psychology from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa in 1949. After graduation, she accepted a position as a computer programmer at Argonne National Laboratories and worked on a team that designed systems for the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine. Lil programmed the AVIDAC, Argonne's first digital computer, which required intimate knowledge of the hardware and was very machine specific.

There she met her husband, a mathematician, Raymond Kramer (1932-2008). They were married on August 30, 1955, and shortly thereafter moved to California. Lillian accepted a job at Ramo-Wooldridge (later TRW) as a member of the technical staff, where she worked on research studying solid vs. liquid fuels for rockets, and numerous other programming assignments.

She then chose to stay home to raise their two children and was a strong and loving mother. She leaves behind her son Brian (Lisa), daughter Diane McGrath of San Diego, and two granddaughters Erin and Colleen McGrath, with whom she was very close. She enjoyed playing bridge in the South Bay with several groups, gardening to attract butterflies, and crossword puzzles. Lillian was fortunate to be able to live independently at home with the kind assistance of friends and neighbors. Lillian will be greatly missed.
