Jay Lederman Obituary

Jay Lederman, a twenty-two-year resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away on July 12, 2017 at the age of 74. Jay was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Irving and Lulu Lederman. He grew up in the streets of Brooklyn, playing stickball and developing the streetwise sense of loyalty and duty to his friends and family that would characterize him for the rest of his life.

Jay graduated from Baruch College and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, stationed first on Paris Island, South Carolina, and then, in San Diego, California. It was this latter posting that convinced Jay that he had to stay in California.

Jay is survived by his life and love partner, Lori Merritt. He was a loving father to two daughters, Nicole (husband Rob Panman of El Segundo) and Ilyse (husband Jason Rosenfeld of San Diego). He was a proud grandfather of two grandsons, Andrew and Bryce Rosenfeld.

Jay worked for many years in the garment industry in Los Angeles. He developed and sold fabric from around the world, traveling widely throughout Asia in the process.

Jay reveled in fine as well as vintage clothing before "vintage" was even a clothing concept. He loved running, and completed sixteen marathons throughout the United States and England. Most of all, Jay loved to travel with Lori, the two of them spending the past twenty years roaming the United States and Europe together.

Our sorrow at the loss of this great friend is for the loss of his smile, with which he lit up every gathering he joined; it is for the loss of the good nature he bestowed upon anyone and everyone with whom he came in contact; and it is in the realization that this lovely man will no longer be in our Earthly lives.

A memorial fund has been established in Jay's name at the Friends of Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA.
