Elizabeth "Betty" Young Obituary
Elizabeth "Betty" Young, an active member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach and well-loved resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away on July 17, 2018, at the age of 94. She was born on November 9, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to the late Letitia Graham and John Jacob Beck, esteemed organist and choir director for the Basilica of St. Mary's in Minneapolis. Many hours as a child spent playing in the Basilica, listening to her father practice the organ, infused within her a deep love of beauty, music and the Church.

Betty graduated from Pepin Academy of Fashion in 1942 and thereafter boarded a train for Hollywood to realize her dream of designing costumes for movie stars. Wanting to do her part for the war, she worked for Douglas Aircraft as "Rosie the Riveter" and a tool designer. After the war's end she landed her ideal job in the costume department at 20th Century Fox.

As one of the first residents of Liberty Village in 1950, Betty and her husband, Tom, the love of her life, were keystones in the development of a vibrant neighborhood. Betty was passionate about family, church and community. Her energy and zest for life touched many hearts in many areas: scouting, PTA, charity, church choir, polling place supervision, hospital volunteer, and many senior groups. She received the 2015 L.A. County volunteer of the year award for serving as Manhattan Beach City Hall Ambassador, and the 2013 Manhattan Beach Distinguished Older Adult of the year award.

Betty is survived by her children: Thomas, John, Robert, Letitia, Peter, and Mary; and 7 grandchildren. A celebration of life, officiated by Msgr. John F. Barry, Fr. John Soltis MM, and Fr. Joseph Moniz, will be held on Saturday, September 1st at 2:30 at American Martyrs Catholic Church, 1431 Deegan Place, Manhattan Beach, California. Donations in lieu of flowers are welcome and can be made in Betty's name to The Midnight Mission of Los Angeles, House of Yahweh, or LA Catholic Workers.
