Noble Carwin Smith Jr. Obituary

Our fun and youthful patriarch, Noble Carwin Smith, Jr., passed away on June 18, 2018 at the age of 94. He was the widower of Margot A. Smith, with whom he shared over 51 years of happy marriage.

Born in Fresno CA, Noble was the adored son of Noble Sr. and Jessie Smith. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, was drafted, and served in World War II in the South Pacific. After serving, he attended college and graduated in 1950 from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. As a young engineer he worked with Philco Co. in New Foundland, Greenland and Europe. Noble met his wife, Margot, in Germany while teaching Bible classes at a local church. They married in Heidelberg and moved to CA in 1954 where he began his long career with Hughes Aircraft Company in the Space and Communications Division. He progressed from Airborne Radar projects to Surveyor, which landed softly on the moon and carries his name in one of the hollow legs. He also worked on projects involving Military Satellite Systems and brought his expertise to TRW, where he worked after retiring from Hughes. Noble also became a Realtor and Broker and together, he and Margot found much joy in helping people to purchase or sell a home.

As a member of The Redondo Beach Bay Club, he shared many fun and happy workouts with his friends in the aqua and aerobic classes. He stayed fit and limber with two different types of Yoga classes and loved volunteering his time with the Redondo Beach Fire Department's Citizen Emergency Response Training (CERT) and the Redondo Beach Police Academy. Noble could be found on Sunday mornings greeting at the Center for Spiritual Living, where he cherished the friendships formed there at classes, the Men's Group and from "greeting" for two services.

Noble's passion was his large family, which was the center of his universe and, of which, he was very proud. There are many happy memories of Euorpean vacations, cruises, family time at Shaver Lake where four generations have enjoyed family cabins and all that nature and family ties had to offer. Noble had many interests, including flying cessnas, snow skiing, tennis, basketball, attending sports & cultural events, techie stuff and people.

Most memorable is his sense of selflessness. He will also be remembered for his wit, sense of humor, big smile, easy laugh, generosity and his big bright spirit. Couple that with his natural demeanor of patience, kindness, tolerance and love, we've had a very special man gracing our lives.

Noble is survived by three children, Hans, Noble 3 (Teri) and Heidi (Chuck) Sorensen; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many loving extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers or donations, please pass on his love and kindness to make someone else's day a little brighter.
