Mary L. Steinmetz Obituary
November 8, 1926 - June 12, 2018

Mary L. "Mary Lou" (Van Amburgh) Steinmetz died peacefully after a long illness. She is a graduate of University High School Class of 1944 and UCLA Class of 1948. She made lifelong friends through her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. Mary Lou met her future husband Bill at UCLA and they were married in June 1948.

As a young woman married to a rising salesman, she packed up her family and moved several times following her husband's career. Mary Lou and Bill finally settled in Palos Verdes in 1972 where they enjoyed the beautiful weather, the lovely views, and most importantly, their closer proximity to UCLA! In 1999, Bill sold his metal distribution business and he and Mary Lou set up a philanthropic foundation, where they worked to encourage literacy and the love of learning in Southern California schoolchildren. Her most recent project was to assist veterans to complete their education at UCLA.

Mary Lou was very committed to her charity work, serving on several boards, but always preferring, as she said, to serve as a foot soldier! She was the longest serving docent at South Coast Botanic Garden, giving up this and her other charity work to tend to Bill in his last illness. Her home garden, and her devotion to succulents and California native plants was an inspiration to other South Bay gardeners for many years.

Mary Lou joins her husband of 63 years, William A. (Bill) Steinmetz, and her brother Allen Van Amburgh. She will be greatly missed by her children, Ann Steinmetz (Steve), Charlie Steinmetz (Ellen) and Jeanie Kay (Terry), eight loving grandchildren Nicholas and Gabriel Tonkin, Gabina Topete (Adrian), Carolyn, Laura and Marie Steinmetz (Rob), Lydia and Charlotte Kay, and her newly welcomed great-grandchildren.

We are very grateful to the staff of Montecedro Courtyards for the excellent care and loving service she received during her time there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to South Coast Botanic Garden, (southcoastbotanicgarden.org) so that all may enjoy the serenity and peace that "her" garden can provide. Services will be private. Think of her fondly and pull a weed in a public place in her memory!
