Luke Erin Gilroy Obituary
Luke Erin Gilroy

October 6, 1983 - June 24, 2017

On June 24, Luke, beloved husband of Meredith Blount, son of Tom and Barbara and brother of Georgia Gilroy, found peace.

He leaves behind three nephews, dozens of aunts and uncles, cousins and in-laws, and a legion of friends from around the world who treasured his sincerity, humility, compassion, quiet intelligence, sly sense of humor, and a drive and dedication he exhibited in every endeavor he pursued.

Luke was born in Paris, France, where he spent the first three years of his life, then moved to California, where he grew up in Manhattan Beach. He developed an early love of the ocean and discovered surfing, which became a lifelong passion that he shared with the friends he made in grade school and kept for the rest of his life.

Luke attended Grandview, MBI and Mira Costa, where he was a valedictorian and two-year captain of the cross-country team.

Despite his love for Manhattan Beach, Luke was determined to experience the world beyond the surf. He entered Dartmouth College in 2001 and enthusiastically embraced a new life. Luke tried out for the Dartmouth crew team even though he had never even set foot in a rowboat. By his junior year he was a member of the first boat and in his senior year was selected captain of the lightweight team by his teammates. He graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and was named to the 2005 Academic All-Ivy for his academic and athletic accomplishments.

Fidelity Investment's Fixed Income Division hired Luke after graduation as a research associate. Within three years, Fidelity named Luke and his dear friend Eric Golden as the youngest research analysts in the division's history.

Luke's drive and determination for everything he did never overshadowed his gentle soul; his empathy for everyone defined Luke. Although his demanding job left him little spare time, he regularly volunteered through Boston Cares. After an eight-year career at Fidelity, Luke decided to pursue his love for public service, and was accepted to Harvard's Kennedy School of Public Administration where he earned his MPP in 2015.

Luke met Meredith, the love of his life and soulmate, in October 2015. Although their time together was short, Luke and Meredith were inseparable, and their love for one another was immediate and everlasting. They brought light and laughter to each other's lives.

Luke took his last breath in his home in San Pedro, California, in Meredith's arms, surrounded by Tom, Barbara, Georgia, and their dog, Gaia. His last wish was that friends and family celebrate his life. A memorial paddle-out will be held Saturday, July 15 at 10 AM at the base of 45th Street in Manhattan Beach.

Meredith asks that anyone wishing to honor Luke make a donation to The Pine Street Inn in Boston, MA, or volunteer at a local food bank or soup kitchen.
