Doug passed away quickly from lung cancer on 28 Jul 2013, in Torrance, CA. He was surrounded by many loving family members and friends.
Doug was born in Iowa City, Iowa on 7 Jul 1950. His love of adventure came from moving around as a child. It was his stay in Hawaii that developed his love of the ocean collecting shells, and swimming.
Doug graduated in 1973 from UCLA
. He was a key player on the water polo team. Though he was a Political Science major it was his time spent with his uncle Douglas during the summers working on plumbing projects that became his passion. Doug loved
helping other people, owning his own plumbing business was a perfect fit.
Doug met his wife Jill Durkee while taking her beach volleyball class at the Manhattan Beach Pier. It wasn't his talent for volleyball that caught her eye, but his very dry sense of humor. If you ask most people they would tell you that his real passion was his son Kyle. There was no event too small or too far to keep him from attending, he even coached Kyle's little league team though he knew nothing about baseball. Doug taught Kyle backgammon and cribbage just like his father before him. He was extremely proud of everything his son did, including his son's high school and college grades.
Doug is survived by his wife Jill, his son Kyle, his sister, Leah Dowty, plus cousins and nieces. His adventure and love of the ocean continues as his ashes will be scattered in the ocean at Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii near his parents.
